Hope in a Jar

Interesting title, eh? Well, ladies, it's the name of a fascinating book being used in one of the graduate seminars. And it's about? Makeup...that bain of every woman's existence. But yet it might be called "hope"--the ramifications are tremendous...

We need not go into the books arguments here, but I do have this question ladies...why do you wear makeup? What does it say about ourselves, our society? In sum, do you think that this title is basically correct or off the mark? Why or why not?

Talk to me.

Judging a book by its cover, eh Russ?

Alas, I must refrain from comment, as I am not female...

Well, I'm more judging a title...the book itself looks to be a bit of a bore...from my handy dandy Amazon description, it doesn't appear to address much of the creation of the ideal woman, but more about the rise of women in corporate America's beauty industry, how it created a sense of community amongst women, etc...

And ARthur, on this post, I dub you an honorary female, should you wish to post :)

It's funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday. I had taken a shower and planned on putting on my make-up and dressing nice when the guy called who I was meeting and said to come outside RIGHT THEN. I still had wet hair and was half undressed, so I quickly put on a shirt, applied mascara and ran downstairs. He didn't notice a thing until I mentioned it. He didn't even realize my hair was wet (it wasn't soaking). I told him what had happened and he looked at me and asked if I had put any make-up on. So what does this tell me? I looked the same! Why had I been spending all this time on my face? I am still pretty confident I can't live without mascara...I do know I look completely different without that, but otherwise, I may be a little more open to being free... hmm...freedom...what a concept...

Another point: I find it interesting that a little thing such as makeup can create a rite of passage with most girls (in America mainly). Have you noticed it is a sign of maturity with girls when they start wearing makeup? It's like there is a point where they are allowed to do it. If they start wearing it too young, it is frowned upon by society. But then as a woman gets older, they are almost expected to wear it. Any thoughts?

Yeah, admittedly, I'm not sure if guys really notice that stuff anyway. In fact, I've always seen makeup as unnecessary and unnatural. But in any case makeup is usually something that guys just put up with because I guess it makes ladies feel better about themselves maybe? Whatever works, I guess.

Girls are just pretty. That's how God made them.
